Sid:
Today, let's talk about everyday decisions' big impact. According to research from Cornell University, adults make nearly 35,000 remotely conscious decisions each day, which means, on an average day, that we are awake for 16 hours. We make a choice every 1.6 seconds. Yep, you heard that correctly Every 1.6 seconds we're making a decision. That's a lot of choices and a lot of responsibility, when you think about it, and each and every one has the opportunity to impact our lives and the lives of those around us.
We make choices in many, many different ways. Some are impulsive, like buying something that you don't need but it really makes you feel good, while some are intuitive you just feel it in your gut. You know that feeling that it's the right decision for you at that moment. Honestly, it's kind of like holding the door open for the person behind you that's coming into the building right behind you. Some are instinctive, like swerving to miss that big pothole on your drive to the office. If you live in the deep South, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Other decisions are driven by our emotions and how we feel in that moment, honestly, like yelling at your kids for spilling great Kool-Aid all over the newly cleaned carpet. We've all been there right and, as I'm sure you've experienced, not all of our choices are good ones. Sometimes we make choices so quickly that we don't have the chance to think about the potential impact of that choice, whether positive or negative. We just make the choice and move on.
I did this Recently. I made a choice without thinking and based solely on my emotions that's the human side of all of us. It was my emotions at the moment and just got to tell you guys, the results of that choice were not anywhere near what I wanted. In fact, some might classify it disastrous but after some reflection, I made a conscious choice to accept what had happened forgive myself for making the unfortunate choice key point there and to capture what I learned from that experience and to move forward. You should recognize here it's important that we embrace our mistakes so that we can keep learning and growing. We need to step into our own imperfections and realize that each and every one of us is a work in progress, with the goal to be better tomorrow.
Now, on the other hand, in 2020, I made a drastic choice that changed my life. It was a conscious decision to get healthy. After returning from our family beach vacation, I stepped onto the scales and weighed in at my heaviest weight ever. We're not going to talk about how much it was, and I knew something that needed to change. I needed to embrace the suck, change my diet and get healthy. So I did it and it worked. Now I feel better than I felt in years, and my non-scale victories include losing six inches on my waist, sleeping almost seven hours a night, which is totally amazing, and that conscious choice was a win all around, and about two years ago I added exercise to my health journey.
Right, and I thoroughly enjoy my morning walks. Every morning, I walk between three and a half and four miles a day. It's an amazing time for me. A lot of times I listen to a podcast or listen to a book. Sometimes I do both. Other times I just alone with my thoughts, thinking about what's ahead in my day, some of the things I'm working on. So you know, it's just so great to be able to do this and step into my own health journey and continue to add things to it.
Now, some of the hardest choices for us are mindset choices how we think and how we feel about ourselves, those around us or situations or experiences and everything else that we allow to occupy space in our minds. All of our thought patterns have an impact on our daily lives and how we show up at work and at home. So today I'd like to offer you a few things to consider that will help you adjust your thoughts and put you in a headspace that will allow you to consciously have a positive impact on your life and the lives of the people that you encounter each and every day all by changing your mindset. So let's start with reframing. When you hear yourself say something negative or something that's just full of bad energy, you know what I'm talking about reframe it into something positive of bad energy. You know what I'm talking about. Reframe it into something positive, rather than saying I have to reframe that statement to I get to. This shift in the simple phrase is so powerful and it will change your entire outlook on this situation. So if you find yourself saying something like I got to participate in another Zoom meeting how many of us have said that or done that? Change it. Reframe that to something along the lines of I get to spend the next hour collaborating with my coworkers and I'm excited to see their smiling faces. Do you see how this simple shift makes you show up differently for that Zoom? Call to me. This is one of the most powerful things that you can do Reframing, I have to till I get to Number two, positive affirmation it is so important to consider when choosing your mindset.
I can't do this is a negative affirmation that I'm sure each of us have used at some point in our life or our career. Sometimes we probably are using it daily. Right to learn how to do this, or I'm confident this will challenge me to grow. You, shift your thinking to a learning perspective, a humble perspective. The outcome will most likely be much better than you had expected and will give yourself grace and affirm yourself along the way.
Now, in our book, the Let them Theory, Mel Robbins talks about positive affirmations a little bit differently. One of the things that she says is to give yourself a high five, just like, yeah, high five, that's right. Walk up to the mirror. Literally walk up to the mirror and give yourself a high five. I think you will be surprised at how this works and how you feel. I do this all the time. You know when you're having that bad feeling, your mojo seems off or you're concerned about something you're not looking forward to it, whatever it might be. Literally, guys walk up to the mirror, high five yourself and say I got this, let's go Now.
If you have not read this book, please add this book to your list. There are so many amazing takeaways from this book. You just got to have it. I'm telling you it's awesome. Now what I'd also say is I'd actually recommend that you listen to it. Mel does an amazing job at reading this book to you and, honestly, it's like listening to a podcast and she is up in your face with the lessons, which I absolutely love. I was telling a friend and, honestly, it's like listening to a podcast and she is up in your face with the lessons, which I absolutely love. I was telling a friend the other day it's kind of like listening to your mom's like it is a great book. You'll learn a lot from it and I love listening to Mel Robbins read this book to you. All right, we'll drop a link in the show notes, by the way, to click on Amazon and buy that book. It is not an affiliate link. You just click on that and buy that book.
Additionally, I'm sure you've heard me mention many times before you got to always seek to learn and grow from your experiences. Rather than viewing something as a failure, think of it as an amazing learning opportunity. Yes, the results were not what you wanted or needed, but what did you learn from it? How will you strategize differently next time to get a better or different result? Yeah, again, I talk about this a lot because it's so important for each and every one of us to remember life is not a perfect journey, friend. It's a collection of choices that create the fabric of who we are. Mistakes and failures are going to happen. It's a collection of choices that create the fabric of who we are. Mistakes and failures are going to happen, so choose to see them as the data pieces that they are. When you learn and grow from it, and remember there's no such thing as failure. They're data pieces. Learn and grow from it. Remember there's no such thing as failure.
Finally, be the energy that you want to experience. If you want to have a bad day or bring those people down that are around you, then be negative, because it's your choice and we all know who those people are. We've been those people at times, right, but what my hope is is that you'll make the conscious choice to be positive, that you will choose to be the light of excitement and positivity in every room that you step into. Be the one who inspires those around you to step up and to be the best they can be. In that moment, your energy can be the gift that others need and want to experience, especially in that very moment. Have you ever met a person who everybody wants to be friends with? The room seems to navigate towards them. Their attitude is one of there you are, instead of here I am. That make everyone feel important. That's the energy that you can infuse into your mindset that will overflow into your attitude and have a positive impact on everyone around you.
Here's a really great example. So when you ask somebody the question how are you today? How are you today? And you get the response I'm fine, or fine or okay. That's just filled with flippant and negative connotations. Why not? In order to be the positive impact on somebody and be that light for somebody, why not reply with something like this Well, I'm great and I'm going to do what I can to make sure that you are too. That single choice to affirm someone with a positive statement has the power to create a joyful ripple effect in their lives and the lives of people that you meet each and every day. At the end of the day, friend, it's your choice. What mindset will you let guide your attitude? How will you show up today? Whose life will you impact today? I hope that you will choose the path of positivity.
