10 to Win: Are You Missing The Signals?
Intro:
Have you ever been absolutely convinced that you were right, only to realize later that you completely missed what was happening around you? Maybe it was a sales opportunity, a customer conversation, a leadership decision, a business partnership. Or maybe it was a situation where all the clues were right in front of you, but you were so focused on what you wanted to happen that you couldn't see what was actually happening. I think we've all been there. The truth is some of the most costly mistakes we make in business and in life don't come from the lack of intelligence. They come from a lack of awareness. We miss the signals, we ignore the clues, we hear what we want to hear instead of what's actually being said. So today, I want to ask you a simple question. Are you missing the signals?

Welcome back, or welcome to the Trend Report, your inside look at the people, products, and ideas shaping the future of workplace design. I'm your host, Sid Meadows, and I'm glad that you've joined me for this Tend Win, another conversation with just me and you. You know, recently I caught myself giving the same advice twice in the same week. Two completely different people. The circumstances were different, the businesses were different. But the advice was exactly the same. Stop trying to force the outcome and pay attention to what's happening around you. That's when I realized there's a leadership lesson here that all of us need to hear. Because if we're honest, most of us have been there. We've become so focused on the outcome that we want, the deal we want to close, the decision we want someone to make, the opportunity we want to pursue, the belief we want everyone else to agree with, that we stop paying attention to what's actually happening around us. And that's what happens when we miss important information. We miss opportunities, we miss signals, we miss perspectives that could actually help us make better decisions. And as I reflected on those conversations, I realized there are three things great leaders do exceptionally well. They listen beyond their own perspectives, they pay attention to the signals, and they adjust instead of forcing outcomes. Let's talk about each of them.
Sid:
Listen beyond your own perspective. Now, one of these conversations involved a leader who had a very strong opinion on a topic. Nothing was wrong with that. Strong leaders should have strong opinions. But here's the challenge. When we're completely convinced that we're right, we often stop listening. We begin defending instead of learning. We begin judging instead of exploring. And we miss opportunities to understand perspectives that are different from our own. One of the most valuable lessons I've learned over the years is this: you can hold a strong opinion and still remain curious. In fact, I believe the best leaders that I've worked with do exactly that. They ask questions, they seek understanding, they stay open to the possibility that they might not have the entire picture. So I want you to ask yourself these questions. Where have I stopped listening? Because I've already made up my mind. What perspectives am I unwilling to consider? And am I trying to understand or am I trying to win? Because sometimes the things that limit our growth isn't what we don't know, it's what we've decided we already know.
Sid:
The next is pay attention to the signals. The second conversation involved a leader who wanted something badly. She had a vision, she had a plan, she knew exactly what she wanted to accomplish. The problem? The people making the decisions didn't want what she wanted. And they were communicating that very clearly, not directly, but through their actions, through their responses, through their pricing, and through their behavior. The signals were there. She just wasn't seeing them. Why? Because she was focused on the outcome that she wanted. And honestly, we have all done this. We've become so attached to a particular outcome that we ignore what reality is actually telling us. Customers do this, salespeople do this, I do this, business owners do this, leaders do this. We hear what we want to hear instead of hearing what is actually being said. I want you to ask yourself these questions. What signals might I be ignoring? What is the market trying to tell me? What is my team trying to tell me? What is my customer trying to tell me? Because resistance is often information and not opposition.

Sid:
All right, so the next one is adjust instead of forcing outcomes.
Sid:
One of the hardest lessons in leadership is realizing that not every door is meant to be opened. At least not right now. Sometimes the answer is no. Sometimes the answer is not yet. And sometimes the answer is this isn't the right path. The leaders who thrive aren't the ones who force outcomes. They're the ones who adapt, they adjust, they pivot, they find another route. They understand that awareness creates options, and options create momentum. Think about the best leaders that you've worked with. They're rarely the loudest person in the room. They're often the most observant. They're paying attention, they're gathering information, they're seeing things others miss, and then they act accordingly. So ask yourself these questions. Am I trying to force an outcome? What happens if I stop pushing and start observing? And is there another path I haven't considered? Because sometimes the breakthrough isn't on the path you're trying to force. It's on the path that you're refusing to see.
Sid:
So here's my final challenge for you. This week, pay attention, not just to what people are saying, pay attention to what they're doing. Pay attention to what's not being said. Pay attention to the signals, their reactions, their body language, the resistance, the opportunities, the patterns. Because awareness is one of the greatest leadership skills that you can develop. The answers you're looking for may already be there. The opportunities you're seeking may already exist. The lesson you're meant to learn may be unfolding right in front of you, but you'll never see it if you're only focused on what you want to happen. So this week, spend less time talking and spend more time observing. And ask yourself this question: What signals have I been missing?
