Buying, selling, and specifying contract furniture used to feel straightforward. Now it can feel like a maze of options, shifting definitions, and pressure to move faster than the work should allow. Sid is joined by Kay Sargent, Director of Thought Leadership for Interiors at HOK, for an unscripted hot take sprint on what is changing in workplace design and the contract interiors industry and what to do about it.

They start with a question that hits a nerve: are dealers strategic partners or order takers? Kay argues dealers should be the linchpin that makes the whole system work, while Sid calls them the glue between manufacturers and end users.

From there, they dig into why recruiting young talent is so hard, why architecture and interior design are not shown early enough as viable career paths, and how TV-style design narratives underplay the real skills behind commercial interiors.

Then they tackle why procurement feels more complicated, how consolidation can help with scale but also create redundancy, and why customers often care more about the solution than the brand. Kay shares her favorite sales question “What do you value?” and Sid adds “What problem are you trying to solve?”

Finally, they look ahead to AI in interior design and workplace strategy, breaking down operational, analytical, and generative AI, along with the risks of hallucinations, data privacy, and client confidentiality.
