Why Do Successful Leaders Act Before They Feel Ready?

the trend report Jul 27, 2026

Have you ever talked yourself out of something you really wanted? A promotion, a new product line, a difficult conversation, an investment in yourself?

You're not alone. I've done it too, and one of the best decisions of my career almost didn't happen because I was scared.

On this episode of The Trend Report, I break down the three things I see in every leader who keeps growing while everyone else stays stuck. None of it is talent. None of it is luck.

Confidence Is a Result, Not a Requirement

Most people think confidence comes first, that you need to feel ready before you act. What if that's backward? Confidence shows up after you've taken the first step, not before it.

At Clerkenwell Design Week in London, small brands and independent designers showed off products that were unconventional, risky, and in some cases, never destined to become commercially viable. The point is that someone believed in an idea enough to put it into the world. They acted before they knew how the market would respond. That's what courage looks like, not certainty, not guarantees, but action.

You Learn by Doing, Not by Thinking

When I started his coaching business in 2017, I hit a wall. Until I found IPEC, the Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching, and it felt like exactly what I needed, until I saw the $10,000 price tag for a year-long program. So, I walked away and told myself the timing was wrong.

Eventually, I realized the truth: I wasn't afraid of spending the money. He was afraid of betting on me. So, I enrolled, and it became one of the most important and impactful decisions I have ever made in my entire adult life.  Not because of the certification, but because it changed how I coach, how I learn, and how I see myself.

The Real Risk Isn't Failure.  It's Standing Still

Here's the reframe that runs through this 10 to Win episode: most people think the risk is failure. I believe the bigger risk is doing nothing. Trying doesn't guarantee success. But not trying guarantees you stay exactly where you are.

Every leader I admire most shares this pattern: they act before they're ready, learn by doing, and understand that standing still is the real gamble.

So this week, stop asking yourself what happens if it doesn't work. Start asking what happens if it does.
